Looking back: The Great Journey 2019

Before I say anything else, I think any road trip calls for a map with an itinerary!

This is how much road we covered during our North American tour! We still can't believe it, looking at the whole thing on a map. Although not every kilometre was worth it, and some detours ended up being quite the let-down, and sometimes it seemed as though we were driving endlessly (and aimlessly), we definitely made the most of the experience. We became more flexible, yet more organized; more patient, yet more ready for new experiences; more relaxed, yet more excited for things to come.

Some fun and random facts about our trip:

- 157 days on the road 🗓️

- 45,189 km travelled 🚙

- 2 territories and 6 provinces visited 🍁

- 26 states crossed ⭐

- 10 border crossings between the U.S. and Canada 🗺️

- 132 cities and major parks as destinations 📍

- 76 nights under the stars 🏕️

- 42 hours was the longest drive between two destinations (Whittier, AK to Kelowna, B.C.) ⏱️

- 43 degrees was the biggest difference in temperature we experienced in 24 hours (Yosemite National Park to Death Valley) 🌡️

- $4,600 for gas (cheapest in Texas at around $0.60/L, most expensive in Vancouver at around $1.55/L) 💸

Here are a few of the "top activity/place/stuff":

- Most expensive activity: helicopter dog-sledding in Anchorage, AK 🚁

- Most money spent in one city: in Yellowknife (not even Vegas!)

- Most romantic moment: dining at the Skylon Tower in Niagara Falls with fireworks in the background

- Best surprise of the trip: the whole North

- Craziest experience: fishing and sleeping in the car under the midnight sun, but also Walt Disney World

- Favourite province: Alberta (spoiler alert: we loved it so much that we moved here in June 2020! Yes, even after visiting New Zealand!)

- Favourite state: California

- Most consecutive nights sleeping in the SUV: 4 nights

- Most expensive (and best!) restaurant: The Fort (Morrison, Colorado)

- Coldest temperature experienced: -1°C

- Hottest temperature experienced: 42°C

- Biggest mistake of the trip: driving to Grand Canyon West instead of Grand Canyon South Rim... 😩 NOT the same experience!

- Scariest place to sleep: literally everywhere in Alaska

- Most unsafe place to visit: Baltimore

- Best Airbnb: we can't choose between the Three Cedars (Thunder Bay) and the Northern Oasis (Sexsmith)

And that wraps up our Big Journey of 2019! We took a well-deserved break at the in-laws for a month and a half, also to plan the last details of our trip to New Zealand. But that's for another blogpost! Stay tuned, folks! 💜
