Getting ready for a long road trip...

Updated: Apr 17, 2021

We are used to long road trips! (2016, Quebec City to Florida)

And here we are! Not even two weeks before the beginning of our longest and biggest adventure to date, and that's saying something...

Touring Canada and the US by car, that's our goal for the summer of 2019! By the end of the trip, we should have visited nine provinces and two of the territories of Canada, and over half of the US states (including Alaska). Then, around October when we come back, we are moving to New Zealand.

So how do you actually plan for such a big change?

Something brings back good memories, but you have to declutter? Take a picture of it!

First thing, sell everything. Yes, we're leaving behind / getting rid of all furniture and appliances, most household items, most souvenirs. It can be a tough process, but if you've ever watched Marie Kondo's show (apparently, haven't watched it myself), decluttering feels good. Yes, our condo feels empty now, but it only makes the departure date seem ever closer. Freed of a "past" life, we are open to a new one!

Of course, you will hit the occasional piece (or collection) that you simply cannot part with. Those things that are dearest to you, you don't need to get rid of. For us, our collection of Dungeons and Dragons miniatures is NEVER going to be up for sale anywhere: I've painted some of them myself, and D&D is a game with infinite potential that we are 100% sure to keep playing. But look at your clothes. Look at the piles of photo albums that are lying around. What about those old drawings of your kids? Those are pretty easy to deal with: take a picture or scan them, and then out! Books you have already read and will never open again? Find someone who would like them, reuse them in some meaningful way and see how good it feels.

We've been planning this move for a long time. This means we've only ever rented our apartments/condos, and we now live in a fully furnished condo. We don't have to deal with furniture or appliances, which makes it easier. Of course, this is only useful if you plan to move and travel a lot, I'm not saying it's for everyone! I'm just showing the way we've been preparing for this moment, and really, it's been a long time coming.

And finally, last but not least, we bought a nice SUV to make sure we could sleep anywhere on the road, be safe no matter the weather and conditions, and be all cozy for this 5-month road trip!

May 1st, delivery of our beautiful Toyota Highlander! Thanks to Toyota Drummondville for the amazing service, advice, and swag!

The next post will be just after the interior modifications I'm planning to make to maximize storage and sleeping space.
