Manitoulin Island, an oasis of peace

Updated: Apr 16, 2021

After a day in Sudbury, we had quite enough of the place and decided to head down to Manitoulin Islands straight away. Thanks to the wonderful iOverlander app (can't believe I haven't talked about it yet!), we found a great free parking spot right next to a lake at a marina on the island. And although we didn't have great weather, we had washrooms nearby, a patio, and loons on the lake.

After a good night's sleep, we were ready to explore the island. After a light breakfast, we went to grab a hot chocolate and a box of chocolates at Manitoulin Chocolate Works, then we stopped by "The Sailors' Church", an Anglican church with lots of nautical furnishings and a great history. Although small (and easy to miss on the road!), it was a nice little visit. We also wanted to take a look at the museum, but it was closed, so we decided to take the trail up to see Bridal Veil Falls (I know, same name as in Niagara Falls). On the way, there was a rock maze where we raced for fun, too!

The trail was quite easy and very well maintained, had a few little cascades along the way due to the recent rainfall, and even offered some weird art along the way. In the picture you can see a family of deer mixed with parts of an F-150... Anyway, after a short walk, we were standing at the feet of two imposing waterfalls. There was a staircase you could climb to get different viewpoints, too!

We ended our visit with a short walk on the beach, ate a quick lunch in a picnic area on the waterfront, and then in Little Current crossed the Swinging Bridge again, one of the rare ones in Canada.

Wow, our windshield was still so clean...

Since we were still early in the afternoon, we hit the road again, heading for Sault Ste Marie, which was quite a good drive away. But that's a story for another time! Stay tuned, folks! 💜

TL;DR: Quite a nice little piece of land! It has one of the only swinging bridges in Canada, a great trail to see the Bridal Veil Falls which were really a nice sight, a cute little church and a small but lovely chocolate shop.
