The Nickel Capital of the World - Sudbury

Updated: Apr 16, 2021

Alright, just as a side note, as I'm posting this we're already in Regina! It's hard to keep up since we're visiting so many places, but don't worry, I'll get there. 😉

We left North Bay well rested on the 27th of May (I just realized I completely forgot to keep you updated on the dates, and I'll probably forget again), and after a comfortable hour and a half drive, we were in Sudbury. It gives off a really industrial vibe, and we ended up just staying for a day.

Our first stop was Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, which is a Catholic shrine with an incredible view on the city. It was very peaceful when we were there, and it was quite the coincidence that I was wearing my galactic deer-owl "Where is your god now?" shirt... I had a lot of fun posing for that picture.

Our next stop was the Science North Museum, where there was also the Body Worlds exhibit. The admission fee was quite high, but we ended up having a lot of fun! It was almost empty as we were in the middle of the afternoon, so we were able to enjoy all interactive exhibits to our heart's content. The beaver was certainly the highlight of the visit, although the butterfly room was really nice, and the bed of nails was a freaky experience!

When the museum closed, we headed to Dynamic Earth (another part of the museum a short drive away), in front of which a huge nickel stands, aptly named Big Nickel. It was built in 1964 as a replica of a commemorative nickel, and is the biggest coin in the world at 9 meters in diameter. Quite impressive, eh? From there, we could also see the Inco Superstack, the 2nd tallest freestanding chimney in the world.

That pretty much concluded our visit of Sudbury, so we got back in the truck and headed towards Manitoulin Islands to have a place to stay for the night. Stay tuned, folks! 💜

TL;DR: Sudbury has some pretty cool things to visit, but just a day was plenty to see it all. Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto was a nice first stop to stretch our legs and gave us a good view of the city. The Science North Museum was more fun than anticipated, and the Big Nickel was very impressive!
